Joe Namath could see Trevor Lawrence force trade if picked by Jets

New York Jets legend Joe Namath, whose former team is the entrance-runner for the best alternative in the 2021 NFL draft, wouldn’t be amazed if presumptive No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence experimented with to leverage a trade — the way Eli Manning did in 2004.

“Nearly anything could take place in this planet, damn in the vicinity of anything — besides for the Jets perhaps producing the playoffs this year,” Namath explained Friday in a cell phone job interview with ESPN. “It truly is happened just before, so why would it shock anybody?”

Namath noted that he doesn’t know the Clemson quarterback personally he was questioned to give his opinion on Lawrence as a quarterback prospect. Unsolicited, he outlined the Manning situation.

“Wondering again to the Manning household and Eli Manning and San Diego, there are some men and women that might not want to go [to a certain team] for regardless of what reason,” Namath mentioned.

“But If Trevor Lawrence is offered, I imagine the upside is remarkable there. Also, I assume the upside with Sam [Darnold] is constructive, but you happen to be not going to keep equally of them. You are not likely to consider a quarterback No. 1 with out getting a couple of superior draft selections … for Sam. It relies upon on what the powers that be want to do.”

The Jets (-8), the NFL’s only winless workforce, could be confronted with that determination. In 2004, Manning manufactured it apparent he did not want to engage in for the then San Diego Chargers, who drafted him to start with in general and right away traded him to the New York Giants.

Namath declined to give his opinion on what the Jets really should do, saying he is not shut ample to the condition, but he raved about Lawrence, calling him “sensational.”

“He is a winner. He is established. His size is terrific. His athleticism is marvelous. His passing capability is terrific.” Just after a brief pause, Namath mentioned with a snicker, “And which is about it.”

Namath has been supportive of Darnold in the course of the youthful quarterback’s up-and-down tenure with the Jets, but admitted he has been fairly unhappy. “From time to time, from time to time,” he said. “The previous couple of seasons, there were being a few of issues I was stunned at. Getting created very similar issues myself, you discover from your issues.

“He exhibits surely superior athleticism than a ton of individuals give him credit rating for, each time he receives an perspective that he has to go do anything and acquire it out of the pocket. But men that just take it out of the pocket, they almost never last very long.

“His passing can boost some with the precision, but that accuracy can improve with a split-second or two more time to throw.”

The Jets firm has backed Darnold, who has a banged-up ideal shoulder but is attempting to perform Monday night against the New England Patriots (2-5). On Tuesday, normal manager Joe Douglas mentioned Darnold is “our quarterback for the long term.”

Namath can relate to Lawrence’s situation. In 1965, he was drafted by the AFL and NFL, which resulted in a bidding war. In a perception, he had a preference in the make a difference.

“These men in the contemporary period, they have brokers to go as a result of that procedure,” he stated. “My mentor at Alabama [Bear Bryant] informed me get to know the people you are likely to perform for and make your selection on that.

“That’s what transpired with Weeb Ewbank. He received a championship and he coached [Johnny] Unitas. … I realized the AFL was good soccer. If I had identified additional about New York Metropolis, I would’ve signed quicker.”
