Houston Police Division salutes its 1st officer lost to COVID-19

Donning black bands on their badges, some with tears rolling down their cheeks, hundreds of Houston police officers saluted the very first member of the department to die from COVID-19 as his human body was escorted from a healthcare facility to a funeral home Sunday morning. The somber ceremony unfolded outdoors the HCA Houston Health care North Cypress medical center, where Senior Police Officer Ernest Leal Jr., 60, died on Friday following a weekslong fight with coronavirus, in accordance to Police Main Artwork Acevedo. Close to 10 a.m., Leal’s system, draped in an American flag, was wheeled out of the clinic on a gurney between two lengthy flanks of officers saluting as he was put in a black hearse.
